Tonbridge Grammar School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tonbridge Grammar School is a state-funded Mathematics and Computing specialist grammar school in Tonbridge, United Kingdom. In the near future the school will be completely reconstructed, for some of the school buildings are considerably out of date.

The school celebrated its centenary in 2005 with many events held in and around the school. It was also a year of great change for the school with the appointment of a new headteacher, Mrs R. Joyce, after the long standing Mrs W. Carey's decision to leave. The departure of Mrs Carey saw an end to a long career within the school, in which its status as a specialist school in mathematics and ICT was granted. The school also holds many other titles such as the Artsmark Gold Award, the Investor in People Award and a leading edge status.

The school, previously an all girls school, has recently been accepting a small number of boys into the sixth form. The first intake was in 2001 with one male pupil, followed by around 14 in 2002. At this time the name of the school was changed from 'Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls' to the existing 'Tonbridge Grammar School'.

The school has a well established prefect system made up of sixth formers who hold the positions for a year. Leadership and responsibility is encouraged in the school from an early age with house captains and form representatives leading their peers. There are five houses in which pupils are assigned to when they start the school in which they compete for points and house cups in sports, drama and academic skills. The houses are named after previous headteachers- Mitchener, Hiscock, Taylor, Arnold and Fayerman.
