Too Late the Hero is a 1970 World War II film directed by Robert Aldrich, and starring Michael Caine, Cliff Robertson, Ken Takakura, and Denholm Elliott.
An American Naval officer (Robertson) and Japanese language interpreter and who far has avoided combat, is assigned to a British commando unit (led by Elliott). The commandos will raid a forward Japanese communications and observation post in the middle of the jungle.
After reaching their objective, the story becomes a psychological thriller as the remaining surviving commandos are hunted by the Japanese Imperial Army through the jungle. This war movie is ground-breaking in that the British and American soldiers are shown arguing with and hating one another as much as fighting the Japanese enemy.
It should be noted that on the large "War" poster advertising the film (which was highly popular in dorm rooms of the time) the fallen soldier is holding an M-16. This of course was not even invented until the 60s. This was a clear reference to the Vietnam War then in progress.
