Transylvanian Plateau

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transylvanian Plateau (Romanian: Podişul Transilvaniei) is a plateau in central Romania almost entirely surrounded by the Eastern, Southern and Romanian Western branches of the Carpathian Mountains. The Transylvanian Plateau, the Carpathian Mountains, and the lowlands in Western Romania are characterized by continental climate. Temperature varies a great deal in the course of a year, warm summers are contrasted by very cold winters. These flatlands have the country's best farmland and most of its cities and towns[citation needed]. Vast forests cover parts of the Transylvanian Plateau and the mountains. The mountains (3,000 to 6,000 ft) are all part of the Carpathian Mountain System.
