The band's largest worldwide hit single was "Obscurity Knocks" taken from their 1990 first album Cake. The follow-up I've Seen Everything was released in the UK, USA and Japan in 1993, followed in 1996 by the UK-only album A Happy Pocket. The song "Hayfever"(1993) from I've Seen Everything made an appearance on the MTV animated series "Beavis and Butthead".

After their record company Go! Discs folded in 1996, the band continued to record and play live, issuing various CDs and demos via their website. The band has especially been well regarded by fans and critics alike for its complex wordplays played against pop harmonies.[citation needed] The loyal band of fan followers helped keep the band afloat until a Scottish Arts Council grant helped finish the most recent 2004 album.[citation needed]

They finally returned in 2004 with Weightlifting which was warmly received by critics[citation needed], and the band completed a 25 date US and Canada tour in September-October 2004. They had follow up USA tours in December 2004 and April-May 2005, while also touring Scotland, England, Ireland, Japan and Australia during 2004-2006. The 'Weightlifting album featured the song "All the Dark Horses", which was featured prominently in the premier episode of the ABC Family Channel series Wildfire.

The band collaborated with writer Ali Smith on the song "Half An Apple", for the album Ballads of the Book, released in March, 2007.

Universal Records is planning a re-release of the band's back catalog for the middle of 2008. This release will include the band's first three albums and b-sides and possible "Weightlifting."

The band is currently working on their upcoming fifth album. Fourteen songs were recorded between November 15, 2007-December 8, 2007 with producer Andy Chase at Stratosphere Sound in New York City. The next phase of recording (overdubs and vocals) is scheduled for January 2008, with final mixing in February-March 2008. The band expects the album to be released around the middle of 2008.
