Travelport is a new company with a nearly 30-year track record. Formerly Cendant Travel Distribution Services, Travelport was created as a result of Cendant selling its entire travel distribution business to a private equity firm called the Blackstone Group in a deal valued $4.3 billion. The sale of Travelport followed the spin-offs of the Company's real estate and hospitality businesses, Realogy Corporation and Wyndham Worldwide Corporation, respectively, on July 31 2006.

The most prominent and valuable components of Travelport are the Galileo CRS and Orbitz website.

The total purchase price of the component companies of the entity called Travelport was $1 billion less than what it cost Cendant to purchase them individually and so can be cited as a good example of value destruction during a merger.

In December, 2006, Travelport agreed to buy and merge with Worldspan GDS. However, at the time, management of Travelport did not commit to the eventual merging of the Galileo and Worldspan GDS systems, saying that they were considering all options, including running both systems in parallel.[1]
