The city's famous for its season markets, Trosa Market in the summer and the Christmas and Harvest market during fall and winter. Every year these events attracts thousands of people. There is also a small amusement park set up in the harbour.

During the summer the city's population increases from 10 000 to 45 000. Trosa is also a popular city to go to for sailors or other holiday makers.

Trosa was known as a town in the 14th century. In the 15th century it was an important site for merchancy, and received its city privileges in 1454 by King Charles VIII of Sweden (a.k.a. Karl Knutsson Bonde). Due to land elevation, the city center was moved in the early 17th century, to its present location by the estuary of the Trosa River.

Within the municipality there are four churches; of those the church in Trosa rural parish is from the 13th century; Västerljung's Church is also from the medieval age; and the Trosa church is one of few 18th century churches in the area.

The city was burnt down by plundering russians in 1719, but the local church was spared by the flames.

The city was incorporated into Nyköping Municipality with the 1970s reform, but formed a municipality of its own as recently as 1992.

Trosa is a popular place to visit in the summer. Part due to the municipal archipelago, and partly because the town itself is picturesque. One can stroll by the stream Trosaån through central Trosa, seeing its small wooden houses.

Today is the municipal of Trosa built up by the town of trosa and the villages of Vagnhärad, Västerljung and Stensund

A humorous nickname for Trosa is "The world's end" ("Världens ände").
