USS Callaghan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Callaghan, named in honor of the Rear Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan (1890–1942), who was killed in action in the bitter Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism during the action in which he gave his life.
- The first Callaghan, (DD-792), was a Fletcher-class destroyer, launched in 1943 and sunk during the Battle of Okinawa, 1945.
- The second Callaghan, (DDG-994), was a Kidd-class guided missile destroyer, launched in 1979 and stricken in 1998. Originally built to be the Iranian ship Daryush, in 2004 she transferred to the Republic of China and was named Su Ao (DDG-1802).
