The fictional Intrepid-class starship USS Voyager is the primary setting of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager. It is commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Voyager was designed by Star Trek: Voyager production designer Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach. Most of the ship's on-screen appearances result from computer-generated imagery, although Tony Meinenger built a model used in the series. The principal model of Voyager used for filming sold at Christie's auction October 6, 2006 for USD $110,000.[citation needed]

Voyager in 2371, with a crew of 141, is assigned to track down a Maquis ship in "the Badlands". An alien force called the Caretaker transports both Voyager and the Maquis vessel 70,000 light-years to the Delta Quadrant, damaging Voyager and killing several crewmembers (including first officer Lt. Cmdr. Cavit, chief medical officer Dr. Fitzgerald and the rest of the medical staff, helm officer Stadi, and the chief engineer). In order to prevent a genocide of the Ocampans, Janeway orders the destruction of a device that could transport Voyager and the Maquis vessel home. Stranded, and with the Maquis ship also destroyed, both crews must integrate and work together for the anticipated 75-year journey home.[2]

Starfleet Command eventually becomes aware of the ship's presence in the Delta Quadrant[3] and is later able to establish regular communication. After a seven-year journey, the ship returns to the Alpha Quadrant via a Borg transwarp conduit with the aid of a time-traveling Janeway from an alternate future.[4]

Within the non-canon Star Trek: Voyager relaunch series, Chakotay is reinstated into Starfleet, is promoted to captain and receives command of Voyager.

The 700,000-ton[5] Voyager was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, and launched from Earth Station McKinley.[1]

Voyager is equipped with bio-neural gel packs, designed to increase processing speed and better organize processed information, that supplement the ship's isolinear optical chips.[2] The ship also has two holodecks.[6] Voyager was the first ship to be equipped with a class-9 warp drive, which they were intended to test in deep space, allowing for a maximum sustainable speed of Warp 9.975.[1]

Voyager includes an Emergency Medical Hologram programmed with a library of more than 5 million different medical treatments from 2,000 medical references and 47 physicians.[7] The hologram itself is generated by a series of holographic emitters installed in sickbay.[2] Voyager's EMH is eventually able to leave sickbay due to a piece of 29th century technology.[8]

The ship is initially equipped with two tricobalt devices, both of which are used to destroy the Caretaker's array.[2] An alternate future Kathryn Janeway equips the ship with transphasic torpedoes and ablative hull armor.[4]

During their years in the Delta Quadrant, the ship's crew upgrade Voyager with captured, stolen, and purchased technology,[citation needed] as well as technology acquired from the future.[4] For example, Voyager acquires enhancements from aliens in the Void that massively increases replicator efficiency.[9] Voyager's cargo bay is eventually equipped with several Borg alcoves.[10] Seven of Nine and Harry Kim build an astrometrics lab.[11] Additionally, the crew design and build the Delta Flyer support craft.[12]

Voyager has the capability to land on a planet's surface, as it is shown in the episode "The 37s".[13][14][15]
