Udhampur is a town and a town area committee in Udhampur District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the district capital. It is used by the Armed Forces as a transit point between Jammu and Srinagar when travelling by road (National Highway Number 1A). It also serves as the headquarters of the Udhampur District. The town was connected by a railway line recently, the Sampark Kranti train from New Delhi now runs on this link. The railway link is a part of the railway line to the Kashmir valley being built.

The Northern Command headquarters of the Indian Army are located in Udhampur.

The Indian Air Force has a Forward Base Support Unit (FBSU) stationed in Udhampur.

Udhampur is located at 32.93° N 75.13° E^[1]. It has an average elevation of 756 metres (2480 feet). It is a district located in the Himalaya's and the terrain is mostly hilly. The town of Udhampur is located in a part of the district where there is some amount of flat land available, else most of the terrain is composed of hills and mountains. In the upper reaches of the district there are mountains such as Patnitop that experience snowfall in the winter. The city itself does not have snowfall.

As of 2001 India census^GRIndia, Udhampur had a population of 59,236. Males constitute 65% of the population and females 35%. The large male percentage is due to the army and it constituting a large part of the city's population. Udhampur has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 89%, and female literacy is 75%. In Udhampur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
