Uecomm

Uecomm was formed in 1996 as a subsidiary of Melbourne energy utility United Energy. In August 1997, United Energy Telecommunications (UET), as Uecomm was known, became the first electricity distribution business to be licensed as a telecommunications carrier. That same year, UET began building bespoke fibre networks for corporate and carrier customers. In October 1999, UET changed its name to Uecomm.
Uecomm listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in September 2000 with United Energy retaining a 66% shareholding in the company. In July 2003, United Energy Ltd was acquired by interests associated with AMP and Alinta Ltd. As part of the acquisition, United Energy’s 66% shareholding in Uecomm and the $80 million funding facility were transferred to Alinta.
In May 2004, SingTel Optus Pty Ltd ("Optus") announced a takeover offer for Uecomm through its wholly owned subsidiary, Optus Networks Pty Ltd. The takeover was a success, and in August 2004, Uecomm was delisted from the Australian Stock Exchange.
Uecomm is now a SingTel Optus company, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Optus Networks Pty Ltd. As a licensed telecommunications carrier, Uecomm owns and operates one of the largest and most advanced metropolitan optical networks in Australia.
Uecomm is a high bandwidth data specialist providing dark fibre services and converged solutions such as voice over IP (VoIP), Uecomm was the first company in Australia to offer managed Gigabit Ethernet Metropolitan Area Networks and managed WDM solutions.
