The Ukrainians (Українці in Ukrainian) are an ethnic minority in Australia, numbering about 34,000[citation needed] people, hence making up 0.016% of the total population.[1] Currently, main concentrations of Ukrainians are located in Melbourne and Sydney.[1]

Most of the Ukrainians first came to Australia along with other nationalities in the post-World War II wave of refugees from Europe.[1] These refugees were termed as "displaced persons" and first started arriving in 1948. Before then, only a small number of Ukrainians existed in the country.[1]

When Australia abandoned its White Australia policy in favour of Multiculturalism in 1975, Ukrainian language radio broadcasts and funding for Ukrainian culture and education increased within the country.[1]
