- In the main, "United" refers to one of two professional football teams in England: Manchester United and Sheffield United. Both these teams have city rivals in Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, and thus the use of city names causes ambiguity. This is not the case for other "United" teams in England, as they do not have local rivals that share their name (for example "Leeds" referring to Leeds United, "Newcastle" for Newcastle United, and "West Ham" for West Ham United). There is also F.C. United of Manchester, another Manchester team that plays in a much lower level of the English football pyramid, that was founded in 2005 by Manchester United fans disillusioned by the club's takeover by American Malcolm Glazer.
