A United Nations Security Council Resolution is a United Nations resolution voted on by the fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council, the most powerful organ of the United Nations. The UN charter specifies (in Article 27) that a resolution is passed if nine or more of the fifteen members vote for the resolution, and if it is not vetoed by any of the five permanent members. These members are the People's Republic of China, which replaced the Republic of China in 1971, France, the Russian Federation, which replaced the Soviet Union in 1991, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
There have been two major wars authorized by the Security Council; the 1950 Korean War, and the 1991 Gulf War.
The United Nations Charter contains numerous formulations which imply the adoption of resolution while not defining it any further.
