In 1849 was created the first Arts School in Chile, as the Painting School was founded inside the University of Chile, under the direction of painter Alejandro Cicarelli, five years later follows the Sculpture and Design School, renaming itself as the Fine Arts School, parallelly in 1849 he Music School of Universidad de Chile was also stablished.

By 1929 and during a cultural boom, both Schools, plus the Kinematic School were melted into the present day University of Chile's Arts Faculty. In 1941 a Dance Department is added from which the Chile National Ballet was founded.

Same year also the Teatro Experimental was founded under Pedro de la Barra, which eventually become the modern day Theater Departament.

Nowadays the Arts Faculty remain as one of the most important cultural hub in Chile.
