The University of Duisburg-Essen (German: Universität Duisburg-Essen) is a university institution situated in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was founded on January 1, 2003 as a merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the University of Essen, both of which were established in 1972.

With its 14 departments and more than 33,000 students (as of Winter Semester 2005/06), the University of Duisburg-Essen ranks among the 10 largest German universities. Many international students study at the University of Duisburg-Essen and give the cities of Duisburg and Essen an international atmosphere.

The University of Duisburg was established on October 14, 1655 and dissolved in 1818. It was succeeded by the University of Bonn, founded the same year.
