The University is the recent successor of a large number of merged and name-changed institutions of further and higher education. The foundations of the University actually make it amongst the oldest (of non-ancient) universities in the country. From 1992, C&GCHE was permitted to award first and postgraduate degrees. However, it was only in 2001 that the University of Gloucestershire was finally awarded university status.

Despite having only recently achieved university status, this institution has achieved fairly high entries on The Times League Tables (Citation needed). UOG was awarded runners-up status in the Times Higher Awards 2006 for its commitment to environmentally sound projects locally and nationally. Projects include joining the Fair Trade Agreement and Public Transport schemes in and around Cheltenham and Gloucester. The University has many different Undergraduate courses operating including Media, Art & Communications, Natural & Social Sciences , Humanities , Sport, Health & Social Care and Education.

The University currently has currently over 9,500 full and part-time students, and has four campuses located in Cheltenham and Gloucester. Each campus is equipped with freely available state-of-the-art IT and library resources.

Francis Close Hall, Pittville and Park Campus are situated within Cheltenham. Oxstalls is the most recent campus built by the university and is situated in Gloucester.
