The University of Nebraska is one of two public university systems in the state of Nebraska, USA. The system has four universities and a technical college:

Two of its campuses, at Lincoln and Omaha, are also part of a partnership which established the Peter Kiewit Institute.

The University of Nebraska was founded in 1869 in Lincoln, Nebraska. For the first 99 years of its existence, the University was synonymous with the Lincoln campus. In 1902, Omaha Medical College became part of the University of Nebraska system. The University reorganized into its present form in 1968 when it took control of the municipal University of Omaha. Kearney State College became the fourth member of the University of Nebraska system in 1991.

The President of the University is James B. Milliken, J.D., who succeeded L. Dennis Smith in 2004. Members of the Board of Regents are:

  • Charles Wilson: District 1 in the Lincoln area
  • Howard Hawks: representing District 2 in greater Omaha
  • Charles Hassebrook: District 3 in northeastern Nebraska
  • Drew Miller: District 4 in the Omaha metropolitan area
  • Jim McClurg: District 5 in southeast Nebraska, including part of Lincoln
  • Kent Schroeder: District 6 in central Nebraska,
  • Bob Phares: District 7 in western Nebraska (Mr. Phares became a regent when former board member Dave Hergert was convicted on impeachment charges for campaign finance violations and removed from office by the Nebraska Supreme Court on July 7, 2006)
  • Randolph Ferlic: District 8 in the Omaha area
  • Amber Lewis: representing the students of the University of Nebraska at Kearney
  • David Solheim: representing the students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
  • Jonathan Henning: representing the students of the University of Nebraska Medical Center
  • Alex Williams: representing the students of the University of Nebraska at Omaha
