University of the West of Scotland

The University of the West of Scotland is a proposed Scottish university, which will be formed by the merger of the University of Paisley and Bell College on 1 August 2007.[1][2]
On 17 October 2006, the University of Paisley Court resolved to seek consent to change the University's name to "University of the West of Scotland", in advance of a possible merger.[3] Following a consultation, the Board of Governors of Bell College and the University of Paisley Court each resolved in support of the merger, pending the approval of the Scottish Executive. The merger was approved by the Deputy First Minister of Scotland, Nicol Stephen, on 6 March 2007.[4]
The merged institution will serve 16,600 students[1] and will be the largest of Scotland's New Universities. The Principal and Vice-Chancellor-designate is Professor Seamus McDaid (current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Paisley) and the Vice-Principal-designate is Professor Alex MacLennan (current Principal of Bell College).
