The first round of the 1978 Upper Volta presidential election took place on May 14, 1978.

  1. Sangoulé Lamizana (supported by RDA) approx. 425 000 votes
  2. Macaire Ouédraogo (UNDD) approx. 250 000 votes
  3. Joseph Ouédraogo (Rejectors Front-RDA)
  4. Joseph Ki-Zerbo (UPV)

Abstention: approx. 65%

The second round between Lamizana and Ouédraogo took place on May 28, 1978. Lamizana was elected with 711,722 votes (56.2%) to Ouédraogo's 552,956 votes (43.8%).
