Uttara (Mahabharata)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uttara is the name of two siblings in the Hindu epic Mahabharata, the son and daughter of King Virata, at whose court the Pandavas spent a year in concealment during their exile.
Uttara (उटर) , the prince, went into battle with Arjuna, disguised as his charioteer. He was killed by Shalya on the first day of the Kurukshetra war.
Uttarā (उटरा) , the princess, married Arjuna's son Abhimanyu. She was widowed at a very young age when Abhimanyu was killed in the Kurukshetra war. Her son, Parikshita, was the sole surviving dynast of the Kuru clan and eventually became king of Hastinapura. It is also believed that Uttara had learnt dance from Arjuna as a princess during the 14th year of exile of the Pandavas when Arjuna lived a life of a eunuch and practiced his art of dance learnt from the apsaras in heavens. It is during this phase that Arjuna admired Uttara's qualities and later proposed her marriage to his son Abhimanyu.
