Valeris was the first Vulcan to finish at the top of the graduating class at Starfleet Academy. As her character is introduced in the movie, she is apparently being groomed by Mr. Spock to be his successor as science officer following his pending retirement.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

However, Valeris is revealed to be involved in a plot to assassinate the president of the United Federation of Planets in order to sustain hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, which is making overtures of peace. Valeris is directly involved in the assassination of Chancellor Gorkon, and once implicated, she undergoes a forced mind-meld conducted by Spock which forces her to identify her fellow conspirators.

When the script for Star Trek VI was first written, the traitor was to have been Saavik, a character introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and played by Kirstie Alley. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry requested a new character be created instead, as Saavik had become a beloved part of the Star Trek universe.

Kim Cattrall chose the Eris element of the character's name, for the Greek goddess of strife, which was Vulcanised by the addition of the 'Val' at the behest of director Nicholas Meyer.[1]

Valeris's uniform throughout the movie has many errors: she wears a red turtleneck normally worn by cadets, yet wears a jacket with grey wrist and shoulder straps worn by navigation and communications personnel (neither of these colours is correct: as helmsman, both the straps and turtleneck should have been yellow ochre). Also, Valeris is consistently referred to as "Lieutenant" yet wears the rank insignia of a lieutenant commander.
