Vazgen Manukyan (Armenian: Վասգէն Մանուկյան) was born on February 13, 1946 in Gyumri, Armenia. Manukyan holds a PhD in mathematics and physical science. He became Prime Minister of Armenia in August 13, 1990 and resigned on November 22, 1991. Also from 1992-1993 Manukyan became acting Minister of Defense. Furthermore, he was elected in parliament 3 times and ran for president 3 times, in 1996, 1998 and 2003, but he was unsuccessful. He is a member of the National Democratic Union party. Before Armenia gained its independence from the Soviet Union he was arrested in December 1988 in Moscow because he was a member of the Karabakh committee; he spent six months in prison. Manukyan is married and has three children.
