Prince Vegeta (ベジータ Bejīta?) is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama. Vegeta makes his debut appearance at the end of Dragon Ball volume 17 of the manga as a primary antagonist; or Dragon Ball Z, episode 6 of the anime adaptation. Vegeta's character drastically changes as the series continues, developing from a primary antagonist, to an anti-hero and eventually to a major protagonist by the end of the series. Vegeta's character is continued into the anime-only series Dragon Ball GT, and then making a cameo appearance in a self parody manga of Toriyama's called Neko Majin Z.
Following the tradition of the Saiyan characters in the series to be named for vegetables, Vegeta's name, being from the Saiyan royal family, is an obvious pun on the word vegetable itself.

Vegeta is introduced in the series as an arrogant prince of the Saiyans, a fictional warrior race from the planet Vegeta. At his introduction, Vegeta can be seen to have a fierce desire for immortality and galactic rule; however, Vegeta's plans are quickly thwarted by the series' main protagonist named Son Goku, who is also Saiyan. Because of Vegeta's overwhelming pride and ego, being defeated by someone whom he had considered physically inferior drastically transforms his character into a jealous and vengeful anti-hero. By the end of the series, Vegeta's bitter rivalry with Goku softens when he comes to respect Goku as an ally and even a friend.
Vegeta is fiercely proud of his Saiyan heritage and his own status as "the Prince of all Saiyans". He behaves antisocially even for a Saiyan; he dislikes the prospect of associating with people, especially humans and those he considers "weak" and "worthless".
Vegeta's perspective and priorities gradually change as the series progresses. Initially, he traveled to Earth desiring only power, and seeking to destroy the planet. However, as the series continues, Vegeta's goals lead him to often (unintentionally) fighting on the side of good. Many examples of his unintentional heroism are due to arrogance and his desire to prove himself better than Goku. Vegeta believes that he is the only one with the right to defeat Goku, and as such, fights Goku's enemies to prevent them from doing so. This eventually develops into him fighting in order to protect his family and his new home, the Earth, from enemies.
During Vegeta's time on Earth, he begins a rocky relationship with Bulma, the technical genius of the series. He is also somewhat proud of his relationship with Bulma, seen during the Buu Saga when he prevented Goku from showing a naked picture of Bulma to one of the Kaoshins. Initially he rarely, if ever, shows her any affection, but gradually warms up to her and has two children with her - a son named Trunks and a daughter named Bra. Though Vegeta's sadistic nature relaxes when he marries and has children, his overwhelming pride never ceases even as he settles down into family life.
Vegeta first appears in the Saiyan saga where he and his accomplice Nappa attempt to conquer earth and use the Dragon Balls for immortality. They are thwarted by Goku and the rest of Earth's fighters. Afterwards Vegeta leaves Earth to heal on one of the planets controlled by Freeza. After he is healed, Vegeta learns of Freeza's quest for the Namekian Dragon Balls. Vegeta then heads for Planet Namek in order to gain the Dragon Balls himself. Vegeta defeats Freeza's elite henchmen, while on Namek, but is later forced to team up with Son Gohan and Kuririn to defeat the Ginyu Force.
Later Vegeta fights Freeza, believing himself to be a Super Saiyan. Following Freeza's final transformation, he is defeated and later killed. Vegeta is resurrected when the victims of Freeza are wished back with Dragon Balls and is transported to Earth along with Gohan, Bulma and several Namekians[1][2]. Vegeta is present when Future Trunks arrives and kills the rebuilt Freeza. After Goku's arrival, Vegeta learns of the coming of two androids that will kill them all. He decides to train for the occasion and defeat both the androids and Goku.
During the three years given to train for the androids, Vegeta and Bulma begin a relationship which would eventually lead to the birth of their son, Trunks. Also during this time, Vegeta gains the ability to become a Super Saiyan. When the androids finally appear 3 years later, Vegeta uses his newfound Super Saiyan abilities to kill Android 19[3]. Vegeta later fights Artificial Human 18 and is soundly defeated by her. Angered by his defeat Vegeta decides to Train in the Room of Spirit and Time with Future Trunks to combat the Androids. Vegeta returns from the Room of Spirit and Time with the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 2nd Grade[4]. Vegeta uses the form to fight the new threat of Cell. Vegeta easily defeats Cell but after an appeal to his ego, allows Cell to absorb Artificial Human 18 and transform into his perfect form. Vegeta later participates in the Cell games and manages to distract Cell long enough to be defeated by Gohan.
Years later, Vegeta enters the Tenkaichi Budokai in hopes of fighting Goku[5]. The tournament is interrupted when the Kaioshin asks Goku and company to help him defeat Babidi. Vegeta reluctantly follows in hopes of fighting Goku. Vegeta then allows Babidi to take over his body, turning him into Majin Vegeta[6], increasing his power. Vegeta forces Goku to fight him by killing innocent spectators at the Tenkaichi Budokai. During their fight Vegeta reveals that he willingly allowed Babidi to possess him so that he could go back to being his old self. He and Goku battle until their fight is interrupted by the emergence of Majin Buu. After Vegeta knocks out Goku he proceeds to fight Buu. He is unable to keep up with Buu's ability to regenerate however, and is saved by Trunks and Goten. Realizing that he still loves his family, despite selling his soul, Vegeta decides to use all of his energy to create a large scale explosion in a last ditch attempt to defeat Buu[7]. Buu regenerates from the blast while Vegeta dies from using all of his energy[8].
Vegeta is not seen again until later in which he reluctantly fuses with Goku to become Vegetto. After Vegetto is absorbed by Super Buu, Vegeta assists Goku in rescuing everyone absorbed by Buu. Vegeta also rips out the original Buu from Super Buu which causes Super Buu to revert back to Kid Buu, Buu's original form. Vegeta along with Goku, Mr. Satan and Dende are transported to the planet of the Kaioshin when the Earth is destroyed by Kid Buu. Vegeta then helps Goku buy time to create a Genkai Dama, which would destroy Buu. After Buu is destroyed, Vegeta returns to earth and lives a quiet lifestyle for the next 10 years. During this time Vegeta and Bulma have their second child, Bra[9]. Vegeta competes in the Tenkaichi Budokai again and watches as Goku leaves with Uub. Years later in Dragon Ball GT Vegeta is taken over by the parasite Baby and is turned into Baby Vegeta. Baby Vegeta is defeated by Super Saiyan 4 Goku, and Vegeta is returned to normal. Later Vegeta is a participant in the battle against Super #17 in which he is nearly killed but saved by Goku. Vegeta also helps Goku in the battle against Yi Xing Long, in the battle Vegeta transforms for the first and only time into a Super Saiyan 4.
As a member of the Saiyan race, Vegeta possesses a large number of transformations that enhance his abilities to varying degrees and alter his physical appearance. He has the ability to become an Oozaru, so long as he still has his tail,[10] which increases his strength tenfold.[11] He also eventually learns to become a Super Saiyan on several different levels (including Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 4), increasing his physical strengths and capabilities even further. Furthermore, Vegeta can perform the Fusion Dance with Son Goku to become Gogeta.[12]
Vegeta also has a large library of abilities and attacks, mostly due to the fact that he uses a new attack in almost every fight. Like most other characters, Vegeta has the ability to use Bukujutsu (lit. "lighter than air skill"), which allows him to take flight. His signature attack, the Garlic Cannon (in keeping with the Saiyan puns on vegetables), is a beam similar to the Kamehameha Wave, though fuchsia and released with the palms open rather than having the fingers curve inwards. Ironically, this technique is used very rarely in the series, though is usually one of his techniques in many of his different video game counterparts. In Dragon Ball GT, this attack is replaced with the Final Shine Attack. It is fairly similar to his Garlic Cannon, though green in color and utilizes only one cupped hand to charge it up. His most powerful attacks are his Big Bang Attack (a ball of energy fired from the palm of his hand) and Final Flash (which gathers energy in both hands separately, brings them together, builds more and fires it all in one beam).
Vegeta has appeared in many Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT-related video games as both a playable character and boss. Often, he is playable in several different forms, such as his Super Saiyan transformations and even Majin Vegeta and Oozaru Vegeta. Baby Vegeta is also often a playable character and boss in GT-related games.
Vegeta has been a representative of the series in various crossover pieces of media. These include video games, such as Battle Stadium D.O.N and Jump Super Stars; Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball self parody Neko Majin; and Cross Epoch, a Dragon Ball and One Piece crossover manga.
