In New York City's public transportation system, MetroCard Vending Machines (MVM) can be used to buy a MetroCard and check remaining fares on MetroCard. MVM's accept various forms of payment Credit Card, Debit Card and Cash (however you can only receive up to $6.00 in change when you pay with cash). The following MetroCards are sold:

  • Single Fare - a one-time-use MetroCard with no transfer $2.00
  • Pay-per-ride - a pay per ride MetroCard can hold up to $76.00 and every $10 spent gets a free fare
  • 1 day fun pass - unlimited uses for one day (expires midnight of day of first swipe)
  • 7 day - $24 for unlimited rides within a 7 day period (expires midnight 7 days from first swipe)
  • 30 day - $76 for unlimited rides within a 30 day period (expires midnight 30 days from first swipe). The 30 day card is insured against loss
