Verona Rupes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verona Rupes is a cliff on the planet Uranus's moon Miranda. At 20 km (12 miles) high, it is the tallest known cliff in the solar system, ten times the depth of the Grand Canyon.[1]
Such a tall feature on such a small moon is evidence of massive forces at work. One possibility is a massive impact, which caused the moon to disrupt and reassemble.[2]
If a human were to jump off the cliff, it would take about 12 minutes to reach the bottom in Miranda's weak gravity (about 1/120th that of the Earth). The fall would still be lethal, striking the ground at about 200 km/h (125 mph). Ignoring air resistance, it would only take a 160m (530ft) fall on Earth to reach the same speed (which would take less than 6 seconds)
