"Verse Chorus Verse" (often mislabeled in bootlegs as "In His Hands" or "In His Room") is a song by American rock band Nirvana. The song was performed live or during soundchecks in the '90-'91 era and was recorded during the Nevermind sessions.
In an early draft of the song, found in Journals, singer-songwriter and guitarist Kurt Cobain's lyrics included the line "at the end of rainbows and of your rope," which is best known from Nevermind's liner notes.
The attempted recording for Nevermind was posthumously released in the 2004 box set With the Lights Out.
Due to the fact that Cobain liked the song's lyrics and that the public knew nothing of the song, Cobain decided to recycle lyrics from Verse Chorus Verse for other songs. The lines that were taken from "Verse Chorus Verse" and inserted into other songs are as follows:
"I've been drawn into your magnet tar-pit trap" – "Heart-Shaped Box"
"A lack of iron and/or sleeping" – "Milk It"
"I got so high, I scratched 'til I bled" – "On a Plain"
"Black sheep got blackmailed again" – "On a Plain"
"You're in a laundry room" – "Sappy"
"I'll see you in court" – "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (early version)
- The name was also used in a later Nirvana recording, most commonly known as "Sappy."
