Raghavan (Kamal Haasan) is an honest cop in Tamil Nadu. His wife Kayalvizhi (Kamalinee Mukerji) dies in a violent incident. Arokiyaraj (Prakash Raj) is his colleague. Raghavan is deputed to investigate into Arokiya Raj's daughter murder at some remote village in Tamilnadu. Arokiya Raj shifts his base to New York after his daughter's murder.
After few months, Raghavan receives message about gruesome murder of Arokiya Raj and his wife. He proceeds to New York to conduct preliminary investigations. There, he saves Aradhana (Jyothika) from committing suicide due to problems with her estranged husband. Raghavan unearths series of young girls murdered at New York. He finds pattern in those murders and finds resemblance with Arokiyaraj's daughter murder at India. Based on these clues,he tracks down two Indian medical students studying at New York. They escape to India by causing severe injuries to Raghavan.
Raghavan returns back to India and Aradhana follows with him. She accepts Raghavan's offer for marriage. In India, culprits chase Raghavan and commit a series of murders including Raghavan's driver and security guarding his house. Meanwhile, Aradhana accedes to Raghavan's proposal to marry her and accept Maya, her daughter from her previous marriage, and herself as his own. The serial killers see this and kidnap Aradhana in an attempt to blackmail Raghavan. The rest of the story is a graphic depiction of the culprit's acts and about how Raghavan traces and brings an end to the chase.
The film is one of the most beautifully shot film with camera by Ravi Verman and ably supported by editor Anthony. Kamal Haasan's Raghavan is underplayed and is a class act. This is easily Kamal's best performance in recent years. The encounter scenes between the villains and the hero are laudable. On the down side there has been too much of violence against women. The murders are gruesome. However, the film has been declared a super hit of recent times. The highlights of the movie are Gautham Menon's incredible hold over the medium and his trademark awesome narrating skills, racy climax, incredible camerawork and Kamal Haasan's performance which included a scintillating introduction.
