Internet vigilantism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Internet vigilantism is the act of vigilantism on the Internet against people whom the "vigilantes" think have committed wrongs. The act is an increasingly common phenomenon brought about by the growth of online communities.
While Internet vigilantism occurred earlier, the increase in popularity of blogs has encouraged users to record actions of Internet vigilantism. This may be because such action make people feel that they are actively playing a part in maintaining justice. It has also proven a method of obtaining a large amount of hits to the website which details the actions, reflecting the internet communities disdain for such scammers and empathy with the scam victims.
Actions that may be taken can be as simple as counter scams, or as complicated as a co-ordinated humiliation or action. An example of this is scambaiting that is meant to waste the scammer's time and humiliate them. Some of this vigilantism have ended up assisting the police in their investigation of such scams.[citation needed]
