Mehra made his debut in the 1960 film Bewaqoof as a child artist playing the younger version of the character played by Kishore Kumar. He started his adult film career in 1970 and acted in over 100 films in his career spanning over two decades. He played the lead role in some of his earlier films but often acted in many multi-starrer films playing supporting roles. He worked with many actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra etc. His frequent female co-stars includes Rekha and Bindiya Goswami. Some of his prominent films were Lal Patthar, Amar Prem, Nagin, Jaani Dushman, Swarg Narak, Khud-daar, Anurodh, Bemisaal, Sabse Bada Rupaiya and Ghar.

He was married four times. His first marriage to Meena Broca was arranged by his mother. The marriage was reportedly not consummated as Vinod had a heart attack shortly after the marriage. Once he recovered, he married his frequent leading lady Bindiya Goswami while still married to Meena. Meena left him and went back to her parents house. His marriage to Bindiya also quickly dissolved, and she soon married director J.P. Dutta with whom she has two daughters.[1] He was said to be married to superstar Rekha, although in a 2004 television interview with Simi Garewal, she denied being married to him calling him a "well-wisher."[2] His last wife was Kiran, and that marriage lasted until his death. With Kiran he had two children Soniya and Rohan.

Daughter Soniya is set to make her debut into films later this year in a film titled Victoria No. 21 opposite Jimmy Shergill."[3]

He had turned director with the film Gurudev in the late 1980s, but he suddenly died of a heart attack before completion of the film at the age of 45 in 1990. The film was released in 1993 after director Raj Sippy completed the remaining shooting that needed to be done.

Many of his delayed completed films that he appeared in including Patthar Ke Phool and Insaniyat were released after his death with his final film being Aatank released in 1996.
