Vla is the name of two Dutch food products. One is a pie, called 'vla' in the South, from whence it originates, but more commonly known as vlaai. The other is a type of custard. It is dairy product made from fresh milk which first appeared in the 1950s. It has the viscosity of yoghurt, but is sweet rather than sour. It is served cold and is available in several flavors. These include:
- Plain
- vanilla
- Chocolate
- Raspberry
- Caramel
- Hopjes (coffee/caramel)
- Stracciatella (chocolate shavings)
- Cream
- Banana
- Strawberry
- Milk Cream (in several flavours)
- Almond cookies
Traditional vla is made of cooked milk with custard, or with a combination of eggs, maizena, vanilla and sugar. Vla found in Dutch supermarkets is usually also made with other additives including thickeners.
Plain vla is frequently enjoyed with apple sauce, or as a vlaflip: with yoghurt and fruit syrup.
An excellent way of serving vla is to use both plain and vanilla to create an 'fried egg' effect. Pour the plain vla onto a plate or bowl and then pour a smaller quantity of the vanilla vla in the middle. This can also be down the other way round, for a 'reversed fried egg' effect.
