Volkhov Front

The Volkhov Front was a Front (i.e. a military formation of roughly Army Group size) of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. This sense of the term is not identical with the more general usage of military front which indicates a geographic area in wartime, although a Soviet Front may operate within designated boundaries.
The Volkov Front was formed in December 1941 under the command of General Kirill Meretskov, with General Stelmakh as Chief of Staff and Zaporozhets as commissar. Initially Sokolov's 26th (later 2nd Shock) and Galanin's 59th Armies were allocated to the formation.
The Front also included Meretskov's 4th Army and Klykov's 52nd Army.
The Front was disbanded and incorporated within Leningrad Front in late March 1942.
