WBIR-TV signed on the air on September 22, 1956 as an affiliate of the CBS television network. It was owned by Jesse W. "Jay" Birdwell along with WBIR radio (1240 AM, now WIFA; and 103.5 FM, frequency now occupied by WIMZ). In the early 1960s, Birdwell sold his stations to Southern Broadcasting Corporation, which merged with the News-Piedmont Publishing Company of Greenville, South Carolina in 1967 to form Multimedia.

In 1988, WBIR became an NBC affiliate, swapping affiliations with WKXT-TV (channel 8, now WVLT-TV). Multimedia merged with Gannett in 1995.

The station's longtime "Straight from the Heart" branding is evident throughout WBIR's locally-produced programming and newscasts. The slogan is accompanied by a decidedly non-tabloid feel in WBIR's newscasts. The 10 News studio and graphics are accompanied by serene shots of East Tennessee landscapes, news music that is Celtic in nature, and story segments such as retired anchor Bill Williams' weekly features profiling children in need of adoption. WBIR also airs "Heartland Series" reports at 6:25 a.m., 12:25 p.m., and 11:30 p.m. The segments highlight unique features and people from throughout East Tennessee. (For more, see below.)

Viewers seem to appreciate the station's tone, and WBIR generally ranks first in the local newscast race. Rival WATE-TV has, on some occasions, out-paced WBIR's ratings. Still, WBIR is the overall leader in Knoxville households.

In 2006, WBIR celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special report on some of the past stories captured on WBIR for the past 50 years. These reports were called "Our Stories" and included retrospectives on events such as U.S. Presidents visiting Knoxville and East Tennessee, major crimes and even the 25th Anniversary of the 1982 World's Fair.
