WCAV is the CBS-affiliated television station for Charlottesville, Virginia. Licensed to the city, the station broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 19 from a transmitter located on Carters Mountain south of Charlottesville. WCAV is the flagship station of a cluster of Gray Television-owned television stations based in Charlottesville. This includes the area's low-powered ABC affiliate WVAW-LP and Class A FOX affiliate WAHU-CA.

All three stations broadcast out of shared studio facilities known as the "Charlottesville Newsplex" located on 2nd Street S.E. in Downtown Charlottesville. In addition, some behind-the-scenes duties are run alongside that of sister station WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, which the "Newsplex" has a resource sharing alliance with. WCAV is known on-air as "CBS 19".

The station was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997. [1] As a result, WCAV did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. However, it does offer a digital signal in standard format identifying via PSIP as channel 19.1 broadcasting from WAHU's nearby digital transmitter. A high-definition version of this channel is also offered on Comcast digital cable channel 706. [2] On or before February 18, 2009, which is the end of the digital television conversion period for full-service stations, WCAV will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its official digital signal (called a "flash-cut").

WCAV signed on in 2004 becoming the market's first CBS affiliate and first station to mount a challenge against established NBC affiliate WVIR-TV (owned by locally-based Virginia Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Waterman Broadcasting Corporation). Prior to this, CBS was seen on cable via WTVR-TV from Richmond and WUSA-TV from Washington D.C. When WCAV launched, it replaced WUSA's location on cable. Previously, the channel 19 allocation was considered for bringing the Richmond market a primary WB affiliate, something which the market lacked ever since the switch of that market's WUPV in 1998.

Shortly after WCAV's signon, owner Gray Television signed on ABC affiliate WVAW-LP on channel 16. WVAW was formerly a low-powered repeater of WHSV on channel 64, and WVAW effectively replaced WHSV on Charlottesville-area cable systems. In early 2005, the two stations were joined by new FOX affiliate WAHU-CA on channel 27.

Also in 2005, WCAV began airing a series titled "Somewhere in Time", which was hosted by Tommy Garrett of Paramount Theater in Charlottesville. The program broadcasted movies as well as segments of the host with a famous guest. The show was dropped in early 2006.

Since 2006, the three stations have been the official flagships of University of Virginia sports.

On January 2, 2007, WCAV was moved from Comcast cable channel 18 to the more prime cable channel 6 on the Charlottesville and Greene County systems, replacing Richmond's WTVR-TV. WTVR remained on channel 6 on Louisa cable systems, with WCAV moving to channel 2. [3]

Beth Duffy, formerly of WVIR, returned to the airwaves on WCAV on April 16, 2007.

The station is not related to the former WCAV-FM (now WKAF-FM) in Brockton, Massachusetts.

In June 2006, the station received the runner-up award for Outstanding News Opeation by the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. WWBT in Richmond was the winner in that category.

In June 2007, the station received the Outstanding Sports Coverage award for a Commercial Television station from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. That same year, the station's web channel finished runner up to WVEC in Norfolk for outstanding web site.

According to VARTV.com, on September 21, 2007, WCAV launched "CBS19 News Weather Now" on digital channel 19.2. The channel will "be made available to Comcast Digital Cable Customers in late October on Channel 209."

WCAV CBS 19 on early Christmas morning at 12:35 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. will show for the first time the CBS 19 Yule Log (TV program).

As the primary station in the "Charlottesville Newsplex" operation, WCAV "CBS 19" airs the most newscasts. Sister station WVAW "ABC 16" simulcasts the weekday morning newscast and only airs local news on the weeknights at 7 and 11 PM. There are no weekend newscasts on WVAW except for Sunday nights at 11 PM. In addition, sister station WAHU "FOX 27" airs a daily 10 PM newscast.

Good Morning Charlottesville airs on ABC 16 and CBS 19 weekdays from 5:00 A.M. - 7:00 A.M. Then the 6 am hour only airs at 7:00 a.m. on FOX 27.

During the week, WCAV takes the second feed of the "CBS Evening News" at 7 PM.

WCAV and its sister stations employ the largest television news team dedicated exclusively to the Charlottesville market. While its competitor dedicates a large portion of its staff to adjacent markets, WCAV focuses its coverage solely on the counties that comprise the Charlottesville viewing area.
