The Cruiserweight division in WCW was always strong and WCW stocked up on good cruiserweights in early 2001. With the number of cruiserweights signed, they decided to create a tag team title for the division in February 2001.

They started a tournament for the titles on February 26, 2001 with the finals on WCW's final pay-per-view event, Greed, on March 18, 2001. All of the matches were on WCW Monday Nitro and WCW Thunder.
