WMFO

WMFO is a freeform radio station at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, broadcasting on the 91.5 MHz frequency. The station is a student-run station, staffed by both Tufts students and volunteers. The station has operated since January 1970. It is available on the Internet through iTunes, listed under the "Public" category, and from its official website, wmfo.org.

Prior to the licensing of WMFO, the station was home to the AM radio station WTUR. In the late 1960s Tufts University students ran a wire from WTUR's 20-watt transmitter to the MBTA commuter railroad tracks that run directly behind the studio building. The signal could be heard clearly as far as Quincy, Massachusetts 15 miles to the south, and as far north as Nashua, New Hampshire, more than 30 miles beyond the station's permitted broadcasting limits. This stunt drew the attention of the FCC who promptly shut the station down.
