WMGT-TV signed on September 30, 1968 as WCWB-TV, the first commercial station in Middle Georgia since WMAZ-TV signed on in 1953. It has always been an NBC affiliate. Unlike many NBC affiliates in two-station markets, it didn't take on a secondary ABC affiliation. Its studios were located at the transmitter location 15 miles east of Macon on whats known locally as the "Cochran Short Route" (US-129). The station renamed itself WMGT-TV in 1983, to reflect the Middle Georgia area it serves.
During the years, channel 41 attempted various newscasts, but they were never truly competitive with long-dominant WMAZ. When WGXA signed on in 1983, it quickly surged into second place, far ahead of WMGT. For much of the late 1990s and early 2000s, WMGT aired no newscasts at all.
In 2000, the station moved into a two story renovated warehouse in Downtown Macon adding to the revitalization of the historic area. This was a sign of future growth of the station. In September 2004 WMGT began its current news department after an 11 year absence. It gave WMAZ its first competition at 6 pm and 11 pm in two years, but is still a long way behind channel 13 in the ratings.
On April 3, 2006, the station retired its "41" logo and "41 NBC" branding in favor of a new logo and branding, Today's MGT. In keeping with this change, Middle Georgia News became Today's MGT News.
The new logo is similar (though with a less elaborate font) to that of fellow NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) in Milwaukee, which also uses similar branding (Today's TMJ 4). However, both stations are unrelated to each other, besides their network affiliation.
