WOUB-TV channel 20 is a PBS member station at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. WOUB-TV's programming can be seen in southeastern Ohio on analog channel 20, digital channel 27. It is also seen in east central Ohio on WOUC-TV, analog 44, digital 35, originating from Cambridge, Ohio.
The WOUB studios and offices are located in the Radio-TV building on the Athens campus of Ohio University, part of the WOUB Center for Public Media. The Center is a non-academic unit of the College of Communication. WOUB services southeastern Ohio, and portions of neighboring West Virginia and Kentucky. The telecommunications center also serves as a laboratory for Ohio University students who are interested in gaining experience in broadcasting and related technologies.
In addition to radio and television, WOUB is also active in distance learning, online services, and media production.
Currently Athens County is located in the Columbus market area, but the TV station can be received in parts of that market, all of the Zanesville market, and portions of the Huntington-Charleston, Parkersburg and Wheeling / Steubenville markets. The station completed a microwave link to permit it to be carried in the Huntington-Charleston local packages of the DBS providers, which has greatly increased its range.
Unlike most PBS stations, the channel produces a regular local news cast comprised of university students studying and training on television news casts at Ohio University. With that, they mainly focus on the area around Athens, which is mostly ignored by the Columbus and Huntington-Charleston stations that serve the Athens area.
Alumni of the station include Matt Lauer and numerous major market television news anchors and reporters.
Even though WOUB and WOUC both share the same analog programming, the digital offerings are different on both channels, expanding the choices of programming for digital viewers within the coverage areas of both transmitters.
Services from the Athens transmitter are: WOUB Classic, WOUB Learns, WOUB Kids and WOUB International. Services from the Cambridge transmitter are: WOUB News & Information, WOUB Makes, WOUB On Stage, and WOUB Unlimited.
