Q100 has been in metro Atlanta, licensed to College Park only since early 2001. Until then, it was in eastern Alabama as country music station Alabama 100 (WHMA-FM), licensed to Anniston.
Susquehanna originally proposed that the station be licensed to Sandy Springs, and remain at 100,000 watts ERP (class C). An agreement had been made with the nearest co-channel station, WSSL-FM in upstate South Carolina for it to move further away, however this never happened, and the FCC eventually denied the request for this reason. The second proposal was approved due to both a change in city of license, and in the class of station from C1 (up to 100 kW) down to C3 (up to 25 kW) to avoid WSSL-FM.
The move left two new radio stations in Alabama, but forced WGHR and W264AE off the air in the Atlanta area. The FCC later upgraded the new station from a 3 kW class C3 to a 27 kW class C2, and the station moved from the WZGC FM tower to its own, then to another for the upgrade. Neither tower is the same as sister station WNNX FM has listed.
While the station out performed the earlier 3,000 watt signal (The Bert Show in particular), the station's ratings were affected by the poor signal coverage in Atlanta's affluent northern suburbs, where a large portion of the WWWQ's target demographic lives. On October 24, 2005 at 5:00 PM, the station increased its signal from 3,000 watts to 12,500 watts to give it a more competitive edge in the market.
This station is now broadcasting in IBOC digital radio, using the HD Radio system from iBiquity. The Station also broadcast live, worldwide, and 24/7 at www.allthehitsQ100.com. Top 40 music from the 1990s can also be heard on 100.5 HD-2.
The Bert Show is Q100's first morning show. The hosts are Bert Weiss, Jeff Dauler, Jen Hobby, and Melissa Carter. Stunt guy Hoss, and Producer Tracy also make appearances. Many of the Bert Show's events benefit the Bert's Big Adventure charity. The Bert Show Interns also make random appearances on the show, they include Intern Jenn (Fallin), Intern DJ, Intern Karol, Intern Chuck and others. Jeff Dauler's wife Jessica does the shopping report every Friday morning. Jaime Massey does the traffic report updates.
On April 5, 2007, Q100 and The Bert Show hosted a promotion at Six Flags Over Georgia. Anyone who arrived at the theme park between 6am and 9am was to be admitted free for the day. The promotion occurred during metro Atlanta schools' spring break, and cars began arriving by 3:00am. By 6:00am, the park had already reached capacity, and Six Flags officials shut the gates. People were seen walking along and across the interstate and among area sidestreets. Police closed exits leading to the theme park. Children whose parents dropped them off along the interstate on their way to work were stranded. The ensuing chaos wreaked havoc on I-20 and snarled Atlanta's westside during the morning rush hour.
