WZZN 94.7 FM is an oldies radio station playing the hits of the late '50's, '60's, and early '70's. The station is owned by ABC and licensed to Chicago, Illinois, serving that metropolitan area. The station switched to oldies on September 26, 2005 first carrying only syndicated "The True Oldies Channel" programming, but later added local personalities including Scott Mackay, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame disc jockeys John Landecker and Dick Biondi.
Previously, they carried various formats with numerous call letter changes. In the early 2000s, it was active rock "94.7 The Zone," from which the station's current identity is derived. In the late 1990s, this was a country station that competed unsuccessfully with Infinity Broadcasting's (now CBS Radio's) WUSN. Before that, it was a talk station, WLS-FM, which was more or less a simulcast of WLS, 890AM. Before that, it was WYTZ, first as a rock station "Z94.7" then as contemporary hit radio "Hot 94.7." WYTZ could not withstand the competition from WBBM-FM, "B96."
This station will be included in the impending sale of ABC Radio to Citadel Broadcasting.
