Originally known as 'South Wales and West Railway', this privatised UK train operating company was created from the South Wales and West division of Regional Railways. The franchise was awarded to Prism Rail. The shortened name was adopted during 1997.
On 14 October 2001 the Wales and West company, now a part of the National Express Group following the buyout of Prism Rail, was divided into two new companies, Wales and Borders Trains for services in Wales and Central England and Wessex Trains for the West Country and South West England.
