Manga Arc: Unmask Kakashi

Want to see, want to know, want to confirm Kakashi-sensei's true face (Japanese: 見たい、知りたい、確かめたい カカシ先生の素顔 - Mitai, Shiritai, Tashikametai Kakashi-sensei no sukao) is episode 101 of the anime series Naruto. The episode's storyline is from the Unmask Kakashi manga arc, a special omake published in the first Data Book.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In this episode, Naruto convinces Sakura and Sasuke to help him see what Kakashi's face looks like under his mask. This episode may not be considered canon because of how outrageously out of character and silly this episode is.

First, they treat Kakashi to Ramen, thinking that Kakashi must take off his mask to eat. However, Team Asuma gets in the way, and Kakashi finishes before they could see, though the serving patrons see Kakashi's face and seem astonished (Ayame with hearts in her eyes and Teuchi slightly blushing) making the team only more curious. Next, they try to follow Kakashi, but they fail as a team and individually. After that, Sasuke gives the idea to get Kakashi into the hot springs, but Kakashi uses a towel to cover his face, and they fall headfirst into the water, frustrated that he wouldn't take it off. Lastly, the group tries to take the mask off by force.

In a side story, three ninjas from Kakashi's past come back to try and kill him, failing each time to do so. In the end, they are discovered, used as an excuse for Team 7's strange behavior, and are beaten by Kakashi.

Team 7 then asks Kakashi directly what is under his mask. Kakashi pulls down his mask, only to reveal another mask underneath that is slightly lighter in color much to everyone's disgust.

  • At one point, Kakashi says "Hmm... So Junko said that... 'I'm going to lose track of you'." This is a reference to Naruto's seiyū voice actor, Junko Takeuchi.
  • The episode makes visual references to Kakashi Hatake's name. At one point, Sakura is fooled by a decoy that was a scarecrow (案山子 kakashi?). Later, the team was sent on a mission to a farmland ( hatake?, lit. dry field).
  • The Moya brothers have headbands which depict a symbol for the Hidden Smoke village. This symbol has never been seen outside of this episode.
  • At several points throughout the episode, a crow flies overhead calling out aho (あほ?), which is a Japanese word that can refer to silliness and idiocy.
  • Jiraiya is explicitly credited as the author of Icha Icha Violence on the movie's billboard.
  • In the public bath scene, Sasuke's cursed seal is not drawn.
