Wayne Hennessey (b. January 24, 1987, Anglesey, Wales) is a footballer. His position is goalkeeper. He plays for Stockport County on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the 2006-07 season - having progressed through the club's youth-team system.
Hennessey has been capped by Wales at both Under-19 and Under-21 level and has been offered a new contract with Wolves running until 2008. He even scored with a 40-yard free kick playing for Wales Under-19s against Turkey.[1] He has also kept a clean sheet for Wales U21's.[2]
In July 2006 he went on trial with Bristol City[3] with a view to a loan move to gain first team experience but was recalled to Wolves after an injury to Matt Murray, one of the club's other goalkeepers. But he did go back to Bristol City in August 2006 on a one month loan deal.[4] However he didn't make an appearance for either of them and returned to West Midlands early due to an arm injury.[5]
Hennessy then joined Stockport County in January 2007 on a one month loan,[6] then after keeping clean sheets in his first six matches manager Jim Gannon extended Hennessey's loan spell by an extra month in February 2007.[7]
Hennessey played in all nine of Stockport County's Football League record breaking successive clean sheets and wins,[8] Stockport broke the 119-year-old record,[8] when they beat beat Swindon Town 3-0 on March 3, 2007.[8] After the match he was named as League Two Player of the Month for February 2007.[9]
