We're no Angels is a 1955 Christmas comedy picture starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Ray, Joan Bennett, Basil Rathbone, and Leo G. Carroll. It was based upon My Three Angels, written by Samuel Spewack and Bella Spewack, which was based on the French play La Cuisine Des Anges by Albert Husson. The Spewack play was first introduced in 1953 and is their only play that is regularly produced in repitory theater. They are also the authors of the book for Kiss Me Kate. The screenplay was written by Ranald MacDougall.
The 1989 movie We're No Angels might be very loosely based on these plays, but anyone who has seen it would find to difficult to see the resemblance. The 1986 movie stars Robert De Niro, Sean Penn and Demi Moore (see We're No Angels (1989 film)), with extensive changes in content. It is also a 1993 Japanese film (俺達は天使じゃない; Oretachi wa tenshi ja nai) directed by Takashi Miike and featuring Ren Osugi, Junji Inagawa and Makiko Kuno.

Three convicts escape from prison on Devil's Island just before Christmas and arrive at a nearby French colonial town. They go to the store of Felix Ducotel, the only store that gives supplies on credit. Whilst there, they notice that his roof is leaking, and offer to fix it. They do not actually intend to fix it, but decide to remain there, until nightfall, when they will steal clothes and supplies, and escape on the ship waiting in the harbour. Arnold (Humphrey Bogart) says that he will forge passports and tickets for them to use, saying "For me, forgery isn't a job, it's an art."
