Wedgie

A wedgie is the condition of having one's underwear or other garments "wedged" between the buttocks. This can occur as a result of a a practical joke, or as a form of bullying, depending on the context and people involved; this is referred to as giving (a person) a wedgie.[1]

  • The atomic wedgie is a wedgie where the rear waistband of the underwear is pulled over the receivers head, causing extreme discomfort and possible ripping of the underwear.[2]
  • The Melvin, a wedgie where the victim's underwear is pulled up from the front.[3] (Melvin may also refer to any type of wedgie.)
  • The hanging wedgie, a wedgie where the victim is hung from his underwear hooked onto any tall item. This may result in ripping of the underwear.[4]

Elaine: Why do they call it a "wedgie"?
George: Because the underwear is pulled up from the back until ... it wedges in.
Jerry: They also have an Atomic Wedgie. Now the goal there is to actually get the waistband on top of the head. It's very rare.

  • In the animated show, The Mask, the main hero used "atomic wedgies" as a weapon against his enemies, especially on Police Lt. Kellaway and his partner Doyle. This was taken from a scene in the movie where he did it to a gang leader.

  • In the 2002 movie The New Guy, other students somehow manage to remove Dizzy's underwear from under his pants and then put it on his head.
  • In the 2001 movie "Zoolander", Ben Stiller (as Derek Zoolander) tries to win a modeling competition by removing his underwear without removing his pants. He fails, and in the process gives himself a Melvin.

  • Author Joe Borgenicht wrote a children's book How to Give a Wedgie, containing advice on how to give a wedgie as well as several other "tricks, tips, and skills no adult will teach you".[6]
  • In the Dilbert comics wedgies are frequently used.[7]

  • In 2007, eight year old Jared and Justin Serovich came up with "wedgie-proof" underwear at the Central Ohio Invention Competition 2007 where their invention got them into the finals.[9]
