Wedgie

A wedgie is the condition of having one's underwear or other garments "wedged" between the buttocks. This can occur as a result of a a practical joke, or as a form of bullying, depending on the context and people involved; this is referred to as giving (a person) a wedgie.[1]

- The atomic wedgie is a wedgie where the rear waistband of the underwear is pulled over the receivers head, causing extreme discomfort and possible ripping of the underwear.[2]
- The Melvin, a wedgie where the victim's underwear is pulled up from the front.[3] (Melvin may also refer to any type of wedgie.)

- In the animated show, The Mask, the main hero used "atomic wedgies" as a weapon against his enemies, especially on Police Lt. Kellaway and his partner Doyle. This was taken from a scene in the movie where he did it to a gang leader.
- The Nickelodeon show Salute Your Shorts used the word "Melvin" regularly to refer to a wedgie whence the underwear is pulled from the front.
- In The Simpsons, bullies Nelson, Jimbo, Kearney and Dolph usually give wedgies to smaller and nerdier kids, like Martin and Milhouse, who also uses the term 'Rear Admiral.'
- In an earlier episode of Malcolm In the Middle, Reese (Justin Berfield) is hung by his boxers on a wire fence by a Kreylborne's older brother.
- In the Nickelodeon TeenNick show iCarly, Freddie (Nathan Kress) has his briefs wedgied by Sam (Jennette McCurdy).
- In the 2002 movie The New Guy, other students somehow manage to remove Dizzy's underwear from under his pants and then put it on his head.
- In the 2001 movie "Zoolander", Ben Stiller (as Derek Zoolander) tries to win a modeling competition by removing his underwear without removing his pants. He fails, and in the process gives himself a Melvin.
- Author Joe Borgenicht wrote a children's book How to Give a Wedgie, containing advice on how to give a wedgie as well as several other "tricks, tips, and skills no adult will teach you".[6]
- In Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman there is one villain that gives wedgies, known as Wedgie Woman.[8]
- In 2007, eight year old Jared and Justin Serovich came up with "wedgie-proof" underwear at the Central Ohio Invention Competition 2007 where their invention got them into the finals.[9]
