West Somerset is a local government district in Somerset, England. Its council is based in Williton and Minehead. The Quantock Hills run down the centre of the district, which was the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty created in the UK, awarded 1956. Quantock Common is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The district was formed on April 1, 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of the previous urban districts of Minehead and Watchet, along with Dulverton Rural District and Williton Rural District.
The West Somerset Railway runs through most of the district, from Bishop's Lydeard in the south, to Minehead in the North West. The Railways runs mostly steam trains and some diesel, and provides a very scenic and nostalgic journey through this very pleasant stretch of the South West. Exmoor National Park also starts on the Western edge of the area.
