Before amalgamation with Dartmouth in 1962, Woodside started near Boundary Street in the Northern end. During the years of being part of Dartmouth, Woodside was a large part of Ward 7. However, since 1996, it has been part of District 8 Woodside - Eastern Passage.

North Woodside Elementary School on Pleasant Street served grades primary to six and was a focal point of the community. Since the school's closing in the 1990s the building has continued its central role as the North Woodside Community Centre.

Woodside has been served over the years by the 4-lane Nova Scotia Highway 111, known informally as the "Circumferential Highway“, which intersects Nova Scotia Route 322. The Woodside Ferry, operated by Metro Transit, also serves the community, and runs between Woodside and Halifax.

In the early 1900's a sugar refinery was located on the shore of Halifax Harbour.

Several businesses reside within the boundaries of Woodside. These include the Imperial Oil Refinery, the Moirs (Hershey's) Chocolate plant, the Irving Oil terminal, and an offshore industrial park called the Woodside Industrial Park. In the Business Park businesses include Aecon Fabco. Other institutions are InNOVAcorp, formerly the Nova Scotia Research Foundation, and the Dartmouth division of the Halifax Regional Police in the Eric Spicer Building. There is also a store called Woodside Mini Mart run by a man known only as Ronnie.

A new development called Russell Lake West is planned for both single family and multiple family dwellings. On the grounds next to the Nova Scotia Hospital, a new campus is been built for the Nova Scotia Community College system.
