World records in swimming are ratified by the International Swimming Federation.

All records were achieved in finals unless otherwise specified. Records with an asterisk (*) after the time indicate that they have been attained since the last FINA world records list.
- ^ This record has probably been ratified; the FINA record site for the 400IM lists the old record time (4:08.26) but the date and location is the one for this record. In general, all records set in world championships are automatically approved; see FINA SW 12.14
- ^ Swimming World magazine news article for record. No relay splits have been posted online, so this is the best proof of record. The article also hints that the record may not be ratified because it occurred in a mixed relay (2 women and 2 men). A strict reading of FINA SW 12.1 would hint that the relay itself could not receive a record, but FINA SW 12.8 does not say that the relay itself must be eligible for a world record to be achieved on leadoff. See FINA rules SW 12.1 versus SW 12.8.
- ^ FINA lists the first record set on March 28 as the world record; see FINA Women's 50 LC Backstroke records. Based on FINA rules, it is likely the other record is just as valid.
- ^ For some reason, FINA lists the record as having occurred on November 21. USA Swimming's PDF lists it properly, and the actual meet results attach it to the Saturday finals, which were on November 23.
