Wortley, West Yorkshire

Wortley(pronounced Wurt-ley) is a district of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It begins a one kilometre (⅔ of a mile) to the west of the city centre.

It was known as Wirkelay until about 1700. The manor was owned by the Hopton family until the Civil War and then the Smith family. It was a weaving township independent of Leeds. It then became an industrial district with coal pits, brickworks and railway depots. In the 1880's it became a part of Leeds town run by the council.

The part of Wortley situated between Leeds City Centre, Armley and Holbeck is known as New Wortley. The part of Wortley near to Farnley known as Lower Wortley. Upper Wortley also exists and is situated between Armley and Lower Wortley.
