XHGC signed on May 10, 1952, broadcasting a Mother's Day event organized by the Excélsior newspaper; regular programming began August 18, 1952.
The station was established by Guillermo González Camarena, a Mexican engineer who was the inventor of modern color television; the station's calls reflect his surnames. González Camarena was director and general manager of XHGC until his death in 1965.
In 1962, XHGC became the first station in Mexico to broadcast in color; its first color program was Paraíso infantil (Children's Paradise). Mexico was also likely the third country in North America and the fourth in the world, behind the United States, Cuba and Japan, to introduce color television.
During its early years, XHGC also brought educational television to Mexican viewers, with Telesecundaria, a pioneering educational program in Mexico.
Programming on XHGC also included children's programs, international series and movies, and sport events ranging from Olympics, World Cups, international football soccer matches and matches of the Mexican Football Soccer League; it still broadcasts them today.
- In 1972, XHGC's logo was its calls and channel in Times New Roman font, decorated with shapes typical of the time.
- In 1976, it introduced a stylised logo, with the slogan "La imagen bonita de México" ("The beautiful image of Mexico").
- In 1988, XHGC logo changed again, adopting the slogan "Energía visual" ("Visual energy") and using irregular fonts.
- In 1989, its slogan was "Canal 5 Es Más" ("Channel 5 Is More").
- In 1992, it adopted the slogan "En tu mismo canal" ("In your same channel", or "On the same frequency"), a slogan XHGC used for about 10 years.
- In 1996, its logo was the number "5" over irregular shapes.
- By 1999, its logo was the "5" in the center of an asterisk (*).
- In 2000, it adopted its current logo, a number "5" and an asterisk, surrounded by a white circle, on a black background. Its original slogan that came with this logo was "Reinventa" ("Reinvent")
- In 2007, the logo was modified, using various colors, depending on the program. It also changed its slogan to "Canal 5: Televisión como tú quieres" ("Channel 5: TV the way you like it").
