Z90 was once a popular album rock station in the 1970's and 1980's, before they went to a KQLZ-type "Pirate Radio" 'rock 40' format in 1989. On April 5, 1990 they switched formats to Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio, with a Dance-leaning direction. However by 1998 they began focusing more on a R&B/Hip-Hop product, which they still continue with today. At one time it was called Z90, it was then later called Jammin' Z90.

On July 25, 2005, Clear Channel Broadcasting transferred the programming and local marketing arrangements of XHITZ, along with XETRA-FM and XHRM-FM 92.5 to Finest City Broadcasting, a new company under the direction of former Clear Channel/San Diego VP/Market Manager Mike Glickenhaus. Finest City took over operations on December 1, 2005.

Z90.3's musical direction was focus on hip-hop and R&B to Pop and Hispanic Rhythmic hits and reported to Radio and Records magazine's Rhythmic Contemporary panel. The major exception is Sunday evenings at 10 PM, where programming was in the Spanish language (as mandated by the Secretary of Communication and Transportation of Mexico) was broadcast, which still airs today.

In addition to competing against XHMORE-FM, XHITZ also has a rivaly with Top 40 KHTS-FM. Channel 933
